Maldon Carnival hosted its first ever duck race on the Chelmer and Blackwater canal on Sunday, 29 May. There was heavy rain forecast but it turned out to be a sunny afternoon. The 247 yellow ducks were put into the canal under the bridge leading to the Park from Tesco’s. Unfortunately due to the wind changing directions the ducks never quite made it to the finish line making it a very eventful race. After 45 minutes the closest duck to the finish line and the winner was Ruby & Scarlett’s duck (270). They won a fantastic sweet hamper. Brooke’s duck (289) came 2nd and won a giant yellow duck of her own. 3rd place went to Mr Leslie’s duck (481) and he won a duck Teddy.
The Carnival court with the help of their own little duck (Mia Newland) were selling the ducks the day before in Tesco’s Extra, Maldon. The Carnival Team managed to raise £278.79. The carnival team is going to use the money to hire the Epping Forest Marching Band to lead the procession on Carnival Day.
Rob Slight commented “we were really pleased with the support we got from the people who visited Tesco’s on Saturday. The committee would like to especially thank Tesco’s extra for allowing us to sponsor our ducks in their store.
